PG&E PSPS events hit Auburn, Rocklin, and the foothills regularly. SMUD outages happen too. A home battery keeps your critical loads running through the night. Lights, refrigerator, medical equipment, phones.
What stays on during an outageThe fix for NEM 3.0 on PG&E.
NEM 3.0 cut PG&E export credits by 75% in 2023. Solar without a battery on PG&E today exports cheap at midday and buys back expensive in the evening. A battery stores what you produce and uses it when it counts.
NEM 3.0 explainedTwo batteries. Both on the
SMUD approved list.
We install the Tesla Powerwall 3 and the Enphase IQ Battery 5P. Both qualify for the SMUD rebate. They're different products for different homes. Here's the short version.
SMUD pays up to $10,000
per home for a battery.
SMUD's My Energy Optimizer Partner+ program pays a one-time enrollment incentive of up to $10,000 per household. The rebate is calculated at $500 per kWh of qualifying battery capacity, minus a 20% reserve holdback. A single Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) typically earns roughly $5,400.
The enrollment window opens the day SMUD issues Permission to Operate and closes 90 days later. Miss it and the rebate is gone. We track the deadline and file on your behalf.
Funds are first come, first served. There is no guarantee SMUD program funds will still be available when you are ready. The time to start is before you need it, not after you've waited.
See the Full SMUD Rebate DetailsSMUD My Energy Optimizer Partner+ rebate. Eligible SMUD residential customers may receive a one-time enrollment incentive of up to $10,000 per household, calculated as $500 per kWh of qualifying battery capacity minus a 20% holdback, when a qualifying battery is enrolled within 90 days of receiving Permission to Operate from SMUD and the customer participates in SMUD's Solar and Storage Rate. Ongoing quarterly grid-services payments are currently available only for Tesla Powerwall. Rebate amounts, eligibility, and program availability are set by SMUD and may change without notice. Funding is limited and may run out. Verify current terms at smud.org before signing.
What you get with
a Revolt battery install.
How long does battery
installation take?
From signed contract to Permission to Operate, typically 3 to 8 weeks. Battery-only installs sometimes move faster than solar plus battery because the electrical scope is smaller.
System design and proposal
1 to 2 days
We confirm battery model, location, and electrical scope. Written proposal for you to review before anything moves forward.
Electrical permit
1 to 3 weeks
Permit turnaround depends on your city or county. We track the application and follow up on your behalf.
Installation
4 to 8 hours on site
Battery mount, conduit run, electrical connections, gateway setup, monitoring app activation. One day on site in most cases.
Inspection and utility approval
1 to 3 weeks
City or county final inspection, then SMUD or PG&E interconnection approval for PTO.
Permission to Operate. 90-day SMUD window opens.
Total: 3 to 8 weeks
The day PTO is issued, your battery is live and the SMUD enrollment clock starts. We file the rebate before the window closes.

Battery questions we hear
every week.
What does a home battery actually do?
It stores energy from your solar panels or from the grid during off-peak hours and uses it when rates are high or when power goes out. On PG&E with NEM 3.0, it stops you from exporting cheap solar at midday and buying back expensive power in the evening. In SMUD territory, it unlocks the rebate of up to $10,000 and shifts more of your consumption to your own production.
How much is the SMUD battery rebate?
Up to $10,000 per household through SMUD's My Energy Optimizer Partner+ program. Roughly $5,400 per Tesla Powerwall 3, calculated at $500 per kWh minus a 20% holdback, subject to current program terms. Funds are first come, first served. Full details at SMUD Rebate.
Can I get a battery without solar?
Yes. A standalone battery qualifies for the SMUD rebate. The battery can charge from the grid during off-peak hours and discharge in the evening. You can add solar later. The 90-day SMUD enrollment window runs from Permission to Operate on the battery install, not from when you add solar.
How long does battery installation take?
From signed contract to Permission to Operate, typically 3 to 8 weeks. Battery-only installs sometimes move faster than solar plus battery because the electrical scope is smaller. The physical install is usually one day on site.
Which battery is better, Powerwall or Enphase?
Both qualify for the SMUD rebate. The Powerwall 3 has a built-in inverter and 13.5 kWh of capacity per unit. It also earns the $110/quarter Tesla VPP payment in SMUD territory. Enphase IQ Battery 5P is modular at 5 kWh per unit and works natively with Enphase microinverter systems. The right choice depends on your home, your existing inverter, and how much backup capacity you need. Compare them side by side here.
